The under rated single shot

My favorite rural firearm, an old 20 gage single shot.

Gotta short, compact modified barrel, no bulky reciever.

Very light weight (lighter than a 410) to carry about anywhere.

Almost indestructable action, you can abuse the hell out of it and it still works.

Inherent exposed hammer safety. (try to buy a transfer bar ignition instead of the old rebound hammer ... )

Cheap effective ammo.

Works on almost any game, from Woodpeckers to peckerwoods ...

I kinda knew it would eventually go to a 'mine is bigger and badder' thread but you seem to have beat everyone else to it.

Whats that things weight ? About 140 lbs ?

If I saw somebody packing that thing post SHTF , followed by somebody carrying a cooey single. Well lets just say I know who I would shoot first.

Looks like they are just getting it off the ground (coming out of the prototype stage). They say they have BATF approval. I'm going to show it to my gun dealer.

Cost be damned. I want one or hmmmm make that 2. Thanks for putting that link up.

Those guys have talent.:signs1: :9536: :9536:

How do you handle an ambush with a single-shot shotgun??? What if you just happen to encounter two or more 'peckerwoods' with anything capable of more than one shot???

AK all the way. And for those 'special occassions' there's always the 75 round drum when 30 round mags are insufficient.

As for the weight, don't be ridiculous. That Saiga 12 drum is made out of aircraft aluminum.

And KG, don't poke fun at the under-rated Supersoaker. It is quite effective with the right 'load'. What you posted an image of is merely the *concealable* version.

It was a simple post about a simple firearm for rural living, thanks for jacking the post ...

Halo-

I loved those old 20 ga single shots.
Had two of them. Also used one in Costa Rica
which had the lock lever on one side if I recall
correctly. Very fast into action. Cocking and
decocking become reflexive. 20 ga size is perfect
for me, walking all day long through rain forest or
second growth. 410 and 12 ga are too big/heavy
for a single shot, might as well carry a SS.
You forgot to mention that the 20 ga single shot
accepts a 20/410 aux barrel easily and quickly.

It is not something for the easily intimidated.

Just think, 180 pellets of 000 buckshot (.36 caliber) sent downrange in 8 seconds.

Make it under 5 seconds with a bump trigger.

Re: The under rated single shot

Single shots can be fun and useful, even if they aren't my favorite from a tactical standpoint. I really can appreciate a light, compact general purpose gun for the farm or woodsrunning though.

What has my attention right now is the CZ 452 Scout in .22lr. It's a youth model so it's compact and fairly light in stock trim but capable of taking 5 and 10 round detachable box magazines. I'll get ahold of one someday and when I do I'm going to make a couple modifications. First I'm going to build a completely new stock from fiberglass around a foam core. This is to really get the weight down compared to the wood stock. It'll have a folding stock with sling swivels so you can throw the 2 or 3 pound very compact rifle over a shoulder and just about forget it's there. Finally it will have a rail for mounting a light, there really just isn't anything nearly as handy if you have to deal with a midnight raid on your poultry.

I don't generally hold with the notion of killing wild predators who come after livestock as I tend to see the problem as procedural, I'm doing something wrong that allows the attack in the first place. Well I did something wrong and lost my best hen to it on Saturday, I won't be able to correct the mistake till Friday and the marauding raccoons refused to be scared off even after warning shots and having things thrown at them.

I finally set out a trap last night but only caught an innocent young possom while the raccoons went for my birds again, I had to shoot one of them. As far as I'm concerned the score is one needlessly wasted hen and one needlessly wasted raccoon. I did find out that the coon was already injurred, the injuries were definately infected and possible sick. That's probably why she was going after the "easy" prey. It's a shame because she's the grown up version of one of the two baby raccoons I used to see with their mom up in one of my oaks since last year. I wish she'd ended up in the trap instead, I'd have been able to keep her prisoner till I resolve my problem plus I could have treated her wounds.

The worst thing is I don't yet have a gun that has the mounted tactical light I mentioned so I had to hold my light in one hand and my pistol in the other. It was a long range shot on a moving target with low visibility on the sights and not much time to take aim. The shot caught her badly, through the gut. She was knocked down but quickly got up and walked about 10 yards before collapsing and panting. I had to put her down with a hammer blow. I don't like having to harm the wildlife and I hate not making a clean kill when I need to. The light would not only give me a better view of the target but it'd also allow me to use a rifle and as everybody knows it's much easier to hit quickly and with precision when using a longarm. I'm hoping my procedural correction will obviate the need but in case it doesn't I don't ever want to be put in that position again through lack of proper equipment.

I like the quick handling and short swing of the little 20 that reaches out there.

Those long barrel pumps have to be chopped down with a riot barrel to compete. Too bulky to carry everywhere.

My Dad had a 16 gage hammerless double Parker when I was a kid. Very compact and a nice choice of choke (Mod or Full) at the trigger.

BTW, my 20 is only 31" total.

I've got a Rossi .22/.410. Changeable barrels, very simple and effective if you are shooting animals instead of people that shoot back.

Paid about $115 FRNs, used, in 2004.

Who you callin peckerwood?

I thought we didnt allow racial epithets here?

Anyhow I like that kind of piece. Crooks love to buy em cheap and saw em down, makes a decent throwaway if they got to do "wetwork"
